“The really wonderful moments of joy in this world are not the moments of self-satisfaction, but self-forgetfulness.
Standing on the edge of [Yosemite] and contemplating your own greatness is pathological.
At such moments we were made for a magnificent joy that comes from outside ourselves.”
John Piper

Read on for their romantic Yosemite engagement shoot:

On Sunday at 6am Kyle, Amy and I jumped in the car with a thermos full of coffee and a playlist of Bon Iver, Mumford and Jonsi and set out for Yosemite in California. I met Amy almost three years ago through following her blog and began a beautiful online friendship. Six months ago she asked me to come out and shoot her wedding in November. The lure of the States was too strong and I came out in Summer to spend time with her and Kyle and tell their story through an engagement shoot at their favourite place.

Nothing could have prepared me for what we experienced.

They say that the sense most tied to memory is smell. The first thing I noticed was the smell of wind rushing through thousands of pine trees in the Californian sun. It is the greatest smell in the entire world. It smelt slightly burnt, smokey, like a dwindling bonfire. But so fresh and green
and bright. We explored the valley, Merced Grove and finally hiked to Taft Point. As they rested in their hammock I stole a few moments away and experienced incredible intimacy and closeness with God. Piper is right. I stood so close to death on the edge of an enormous cliff and I saw the frailty of my own life and the fullness of joy in knowing my Maker. I’ve never seen anything so glorious, and in that
moment I never felt more alive

As the sun set in crazy vibrant pinks I’ve never seen before, Amy stood wrapped in my Sackcloth & Ashes blanket on a rock thousands of miles above millions of pine trees. Kyle stood by me and looked at her in a way I’ve never seen. He said to me, I’ve never ever seen her as beautiful as she is right now.” And it was true. It was one of the most beautiful moments of my life to watch the
captivated, enamoured expression on Kyle’s face and to know that God looks at me with an infinitely greater desire.

Today is Amy’s birthday, and Kyle said:

Know this: I pledge with all my heart to celebrate this woman’s beauty and life everyday, not because they have achieved  a measure of worthiness, but because they have been made new by the Author of Truth and Life.

I cannot wait to shoot their wedding in exactly 100 days in Fall. This blog post is best enjoyed with headphones and Jonsi playing in your ears.
